Jonathan Seagull is an ordinary seagull that achieves extraordinary heights by adopting a new way of thinking.

Richard Bach wrote "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" as a series of short stories that were later compiled into a book. This story tells the tale of a seagull named Jonathan and his quest to fulfill his destiny. The poignant fable is filled with life lessons and spiritual allegories that can provide fascinating insights.

Living With the Flock

The tale begins with Jonathan living life as an ordinary seagull in a flock that's consumed only with scavenging and eating. Jonathan cares nothing for this mundane way of life and instead wants to push himself to the limits by perfecting the art of flying.

Cast Out for His Dreams

The other seagulls in the flock shun Jonathan for pursuing a different way of life. They see his pursuit of enhanced flight as dangerous and ban him from the flock.

Ascending to a New World

As an outcast, Jonathan finds himself living alone until he is joined one day by two bright seagulls who fly as well as he does. In their company, he ascends to another plane of existence. Here, he lives with other gulls who want to pursue self-betterment.

Jonathan seeks out the elder of this group as a mentor. The elder encourages him to let go of his limitations, saying that "...we choose our next world through what we learn in this one. Learn nothing, and the next world is the same as this one, all the same limitations and lead weights to overcome."

The Return

Jonathan soon exceeds the skill level of the other gulls in his new plane of existence and begins thinking back to his life on Earth. He thinks, "If he had known there just a tenth, just a hundredth, of what he knew here, how much more life would have meant!" Jonathan returns to Earth so he can teach other outcasts what he has learned.

Jonathan amasses a class of outcasts eager to learn from him. Eventually, the group decides to return to the flock. Though the flock leader instructs everyone to ignore the outcasts, a number of seagulls are intrigued by Jonathan's ideology and join the outcasts to learn from him.

The Lessons of Jonathan Seagull

Jonathan eventually transcends once again, leaving his flock of outcasts to a protege who can guide them onward to their own transcendence. His tale offers many poignant lessons:

  • "Begin by knowing that you have already arrived."
  • "Everything that limits us we have to put aside."
  • "You have to practice to see the real gull, the good in every one of them, and to help them see it in themselves."

The fable of Jonathan Seagull encourages readers to expand their horizons and open their minds. You might begin your journey in Jonathan's footsteps with an online psychic reading or a clairvoyant reading to explore planes of existence beyond our own. As this seagull shows, anything is possible.
