Sun, Moon, Stars, Infinity – I am that which I seek.

When I was a kid I loved to lay on the hood of my father’s Thunderbird and stare up at the night sky. I recall a conversation I had with my sister the night she decided to join me.

“Whatcha looking at?” She asked as she flopped down next to me.

“Nothing.” I replied.

“Seriously?” She asked flatly.

“Yeah.” I replied, “Not a whole lot of action, but if you stare long enough it feels like you’re falling into it. Like you're swimming in stars. It’s pretty cool.”

“No!” She exclaimed, “That’s not cool, it’s terrifying! Doesn’t the idea of being swallowed up by all that darkness freak you out?”

In retrospect, I see her point. Contemplating the vastness of the universe can be intimidating, especially when you’re a kid. But at the time, I just assumed everyone felt the same connection to the universe that I felt. It wasn’t until I was much older that I realized I was clairsentient and that I could feel the energy around me in ways that others could not. My sister’s reaction was based on a what she saw, while mine was based on what I felt.

What is Clairsentience?

Despite the fact that modern readings are more akin to Dr. Phil than Madame Marie the term psychic still invokes images of neon signs, silk turbans, and crystal ball gazing. It is no wonder that clairvoyance (clear sight) is the ability most commonly associated with professional psychics. However, there are several other intuitive gifts such as clairaudience (clear hearing), claircognizance (clear knowing), clairolfaction (clear smelling) and clairsentience (clear feeling). While these ‘clairs’ are frequently used in tandem, one tends to emerge as the primary or strongest ability – clairsentience is mine.

Clairsentience is the ability to sense and interpret energy through feeling. A clairsentient psychic can detect many things, but the most common are physical, spiritual, and emotional states in the past, present, and future. While no clairsentient utilizes their gifts in the exact same way, the trademark of this ability is interpretation through feeling. For example, a clairvoyant may see images of someone crying themselves to sleep if the person they’re reading for has suffered a broken heart, while a clairsentient will feel the ache in their chest and the warmth of tears on their face. 

Another interesting aspect of clairsentience is the unique language many psychics develop through practice. Certain smells, tastes, and sensations come to represent a larger idea or concept. For example, if someone is lying to me or I receive a ‘no’ response during a reading, I will feel a sharp pinch in my abdomen. If someone is telling the truth or I get a ‘yes’ response I feel light tingles on the top of my head. Betrayal tastes like dirt in my mouth and anger is metallic. Love smells like roses and home like apple pie. Every clairsentient’s psychic language is different and takes time to develop.

What’s the Difference Between an Empath and a Clairsentient?

A clairsentient cultivates a higher level of awareness and control over their natural abilities. They can connect with and interpret energy from a distant place or time. An empath will often take on the thoughts, emotions, and energy of others without the ability to distinguish them from their own. Empaths have little to no control over this energetic exchange. While it is possible to be a natural clairsentient, it is extremely rare.

Signs You Posses Clairsentient Abilities

  • Feeling the emotions of others as if they were your own.
  • Having a physical reaction to lies.
  • Complete strangers tend to overshare with you.
  • Creative and artistic abilities and/or hobbies.
  • Nature and/or water balances and calms you.
  • Sharing a special bond with animals.
  • A high sensitivity to the energy of your surroundings.
  • A tendency to feel overwhelmed in large crowds.
  • A tendency to feel excessively tired after social events.
  • Thinking of places as “heavy” or “light”.
  • Forming strong first impressions of strangers that prove to be accurate.
  • A tendency to use the phrase “I feel that” when speaking.
  • Feeling nauseous around violence, drama, and negativity.
  • Your mood fluctuates depending on who you’ve come into contact with that day.
  • You can sense when someone is in a space with you before you see or hear them.
  • You feel the pain of other’s as if it were your own.

Developing Clairsentient Abilities

Mindfulness and Meditation

Until they learn to identify the true source of their feelings, empaths unknowingly internalize other people’s emotions as their own. This can cause a variety of physical, emotional, and energetic problems. If you want to develop your clairsentient abilities, you must become more mindful of your feelings as they arise and learn to accurately identify their source. Practicing mindfulness and meditation will help you to remain present in the moment and less attached to any thoughts and feelings that may arise.

Awareness will give you more control over your psychic abilities, understanding the source of your feelings will put them in perspective, and non-attachment will allow you the freedom to release unwanted thoughts and feelings.

Tools That May Benefit You

Cards - While clairsentience is my primary psychic ability, clairvoyance has always been a weakness of mine. I found that Tarot, Angel, and Oracle cards could bridge that gap and really helped me understand what certain sensations meant as I was learning to utilize my intuitive gifts. I would recommend Oracle cards to absolute beginners. The Tarot provides more depth and detail, but there it also has a much steeper learning curve.

Crystals - Blue Tourmaline, Dumortierite and Clear Topaz are known to increase clairsentient ability. Placing the crystal over your Third Eye chakra can increase your extrasensory abilities.

Suggested Exercises to Enhance Your Clairsentience

Hide and Seek – Select an item that you have a strong emotional or energetic connection to. Step outside while a friend hides this object somewhere in your home. When you come back inside sit down and try to connect with the object using your psychic abilities. Ask yourself questions about the location and pay attention to the feelings you get in response. What other ‘clairs’ pop up during this exercise?

Photo Feelings – Ask a friend to send you several photos of people you have never met. Look at each photograph and try to connect with that person’s energy. Try to connect with the environment. When you feel you’ve established a connection, write down as many details you can pick up. Check your accuracy with your friend after you are finished.

Psychic Vacation – Find a quiet place to sit comfortably. Close your eyes and visualize a location very different from where you are. Allow your senses to completely connect with that environment. If it’s cold you should feel the temperature drop, if it’s sandy you should feel the gains slip through your fingers.
