How to Meditate

Meditation can be a very useful tool to learn to center oneself and become more grounded. It can center a person and be a great stress reliever. Learning how to meditate can be a simple process that can be practiced by following a few simple steps.

Step 1 – Find a Place
The first step is finding a peaceful place where you can perform your meditation without distractions. This place should be calming and quiet where you can concentrate.

Step 2 – Get in Position
Once you have a spot that you will be mediating the next step is to find a position in which you’re comfortable. This position should not cause any muscle tension and should be relaxing but not lying down. You want to be relaxed enough to meditate but not to fall asleep.

Step 3 – Clear your Mind
Once you are in your comfortable position it is time to begin to clear your mind. You can do this by taking deep breaths and concentrating on how you are breathing while you let all your other thoughts slip away. It may be difficult at first to not start thinking about things going on in your life but this time should be dedicated to only focusing on your body and breathing. If your thoughts come in, it is OK as long as you let them leave at the same time. This should be a very relaxing time but it is best advised to practice your meditation when you are well rested so that you do not fall asleep.
Here are a few more beginner meditation tips:
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Use candles or incense carefully.
  • Make sure the room is a comfy temperature.
  • Meditate when you aren’t tired so you don’t fall asleep. Mediation is an awareness activity, not a means to getting 40 winks.
  • Take deep breaths through your nose and longer exhales through your nose or mouth.
  • Start with 5 minutes twice a day and increase your time when you feel it’s right.
When practiced daily as a ritual, meditation can become a positive aspect of your life. It will be easier the more you practice and you will notice a change in your own behavior. You will notice that overall you feel less stressed and have more mental and physical energy.

Meditation is a practice that has been around for years and can really help to center your life!  So what are you waiting for!
