You’ve probably heard the term “Reiki” before, but are you really familiar with what exactly it is? While some people just think it’s like a healing massage or other form of relaxation, it’s actually much more with a very rich history. The following is a very basic introduction to the fascinating practice of Reiki (pronounced Ray Kee) healing.

Reiki has a long history!
The act of laying hands on the body to relieve pain goes back to our earliest origins. Touch conveys love, comfort, warmth and healing energy. Traditional Reiki is a healing modality that dates back to the 1800's in Japan.

A Reiki practitioner has the ability, obtained through a series of attunements, to transfer life energy known as Ch'i or Ki for the purpose of healing. These attunements are what sets Reiki apart from other forms of healing. Reiki is gentle and non-invasive. It can be used on others or for self-healing. Attunements must be passed directly from teacher/master to student.

The 3 Levels of Reiki
Reiki is divided into three degrees or levels:

The Level I attunements are for self-healing and the healing of people who are physically present, direct healing.

Level II practitioners
are given the ability to perform distance healings, healing for people not physically present. The attunements also add significant power to direct healing sessions. As part of the Reiki II attunement, three of the Reiki symbols are given.

Reiki III is the Master level
, giving one the ability to teach. Two more symbols are passed on at this time and the healers abilities are enhanced to an even higher level.

Multiple Benefits of Reiki
It’s interesting to note that the benefits of a Reiki session are enjoyed by both the person receiving the healing, and the healer. It's not just relief from pain, which is wonderful in itself, but often both the healer and the receiver feel an increase in energy and an overall lightness and balance.

This wasn't always the case for me in my early experiences of working with Reiki energy. As an Empath, I found that I was sometimes taking on the pain of the person I was working with. I've since learned how to protect myself, and release the pain quickly if it does happen. Awareness is key. Being an Empath is helpful in guiding me to where the pain is, where healing is needed. The wonderful thing about Reiki is that even without conscious direction, the healing energy goes exactly where it needs to be.

The Reiki Principals
I will end my brief glimpse into Reiki healing by sharing the Principals. You need not be a practitioner to benefit from these lovely affirmations in your daily life.

Just for today I will give thanks for my many blessings.
Just for today I will not worry.
Just for today I will not be angry.
Just for today I will do my work honestly.
Just for today I will be kind to my neighbor and every living thing.
