The dark night of the soul is a term that goes back a long time. It is a term used to describe what one could call a collapse of the perceived meaning of life. Nothing makes sense anymore and there seems to be no purpose to anything. Many times, it is triggered by an external event; death, divorce, a break up or loss of a job. Everything you believed to be true no longer feels valid.
It can be a kind of an initiation, taking you from one phase of life to another. You may experience several dark nights during your life because you are always becoming more of a person and entering life more freely. It is a kind of a death; what dies is the egoic sense of self. Often as we go through this period the only thing we have left to do is go within and connect with Spirit. We find that we are going through this transformation and realize we must let go of what was to bring about a spiritual awakening. The death of the old self and the birth of the true self.
The dark night of the soul is not an evil to be endured, it’s a gift for which we should be grateful. Of course, it doesn't always feel that way. This time is a powerful shift point in our life. It's like being stuck in neutral, not able to move ahead or go in reverse. We are in the void space. This is also called spiritual crisis, meaning a time of awakening to more of who we truly are at our core.
The void of space and time is a very powerful. We are in the space of all possibility that allows change to move in our best direction when we let go, listen and follow. It’s a good time to be quiet, let go, meditate, exercise, pray, breathe and do what we can to be at peace, and expect less of us. So we can relax and find new grounding. This is the direct connection of the dark night of the soul and the winter solstice. The dawn before awakening. Phoenix rising from the ashes.
The blessings of the dark night are our spiritual freedom. Sometimes the quickest way out of the dark night is to do nothing. In this place of darkness, we turn inward to find our own healing light and remember that we can co create a new way of seeing our current situations. Acceptance and surrender. A new type of strength. Eventually we will hear the still voice inside us that urges us to see the world through our deep connection to the universe.
As we come back into the light we are renewed, refreshed and ready to move forward as the spiritual being we truly are. This new beginning can manifest in a new career direction, new self-identity, new or renewed relationships and new activities. Once we begin to see the gifts in the dark night of the soul and our blessings from this experience with gratitude we see a huge shift in our outside circumstances. As within, so without.
With much gratitude,
