Meditation is one of the best ways to calm a restless mind.

Buddha described the human mind as being filled with drunken monkeys. The screeching, chattering, and chaos of this monkey mind makes it nearly impossible to focus and think clearly. A restless mind can keep you running in circles or veer off in unexpected directions when you need to settle your attention on one place. If your brain is battling primate chatter, the following strategies might help.


Learn to Meditate

Meditation is the best tool for calming your mind. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Any time a thought emerges, gently push it away. If you can't keep your mind quiet, choose a mantra to repeat and focus on. 


Practice meditating for five minutes a day and gradually increase your time, keeping with a regular practice. Keep a Journal

Writing can help you clear some of the circling thoughts out of your head. You can journal freely about your feelings, make a list of things to do, or draft a mind map that outlines all the restless ideas jumping about in your brain. Putting your thoughts on paper relieves you of the worry that you'll forget these ideas if you focus on something else. Storing your thoughts in a journal keeps them safe and allows you to let them go until you're ready for them.
