Can Summer Love Last?

Date 7/19/2024

Couple making heart handsSummer is a love story.  The tide kisses the shore, the leaves hug the trees, flowers open their silky petals to the bees that come to drink their nectar. Summer is for falling in love. It’s so easy to get caught up in the intensity while the world seems to be pulsating with love. But what happens when the seasons change? How do you know summer love will last?

Why Do People Fall in Love in Summer?

Spiritual Significance of Summer Love

Summer starts in the sign of Cancer, the sign representing nurturing and sensitivity. It hits its zenith during the fiery sign of Leo, the sign of romance, excitement, adventure and confidence. When you think about the combination of these two energies, it’s clear why romantic feelings are heightened during the summer.

Remember, we make soul contracts while on the other side, eventually meeting those we made them with. We return to earth passing through the veil of forgetfulness so we can learn the lessons that help our soul evolve. Even though we forget much of what we knew, there are faint soul whispers that linger on, like faint images from a dream. This is why we sometimes find ourselves deeply attracted and connected to another soul. In the summertime, the energy is perfect for finding the souls we resonate with. Just remember, if our lives are like a long running TV show with us as the star, there are some additional characters who are meant to be in only a couple of episodes or a season of the show. Not everyone is meant to stay through the show’s whole run.

The Science of Summer Love

Science also has something to say about why we might fall in love more easily in summertime. Scientists have proven that the more exposure the human skin has to the sun, the more we are able to absorb vitamin D. This elevates our levels of serotonin, the 'feel good' hormone. Low levels of serotonin have been associated with SAD—Seasonal Depressive Disorder. During the often-dreary days of winter, we not only retreat into our homes. We also often emotionally ‘cocoon’, staying to ourselves and going out less often.

When summer arrives, we easily soak in more vitamin D, feeling happier and radiating more positive energy and leading to more confidence. That in turn makes us more attractive to others. Since days are longer, we have more time to go out, engage and enjoy life. There are more opportunities to meet people as well, going to places like beaches, pools, barbeques, ballgames, festivals, and outdoor concerts. We are out and about more too, going on walks, riding on bike trails, hiking and star gazing. Summertime usually means going on vacation, so we already have a relaxed and open mind that welcomes new experiences and possibilities.

The Psychology of Summer Love

From a psychological perspective, summer can remind us of freedom. We have cell memories in our bodies of being a child on the last day of school. Thoughts of summer freedom and fun stretch out before us. We approached those days with excitement, ready to savor them like a juicy peach or delicious ice cream cone. Those childhood feelings still live inside us, ready to express themselves by reveling in things that bring joy. When we vibrate with that youthful optimistic energy, we naturally draw things in that bring joy.

Soul Deep Connections: What the Eyes Don’t See

Is there a deep soul connection or attraction that goes beyond physical appearance? Yes, we typically first connect with someone based on what we see because we are created that way. Our sense of sight is where attraction starts for most people—the same way moths are drawn to a light. If you want a no-strings, casual fling, and the other party agrees, it certainly doesn't have to go any deeper. There’s nothing wrong with that. But unless the connection goes beyond what the eye sees, this relationship may not last when the warmer weather fades away.

What if you were hoping for a lasting love? Here are some signs that a summer fling has real commitment potential.

You Already Know and Love Yourself, With or Without a Partner

Relationships work best when you have a great relationship with yourself. You aren’t depending on someone else to ‘complete you’ or create your happiness. You already know you are whole and complete. You don’t need another person to give your life meaning, but you want one beside you who will add to the life you’ve created. A strong sense of self-worth often attracts a partner with the same type of energy. Together you have a partnership of equals who can maintain that loving energy long past summer’s end.

They Want to Know More About You

Do they ask you questions about you? Are they interested in hearing about your hopes, dreams, tastes, likes, and dislikes? Do they want to know about your goals or outlook on life? Do they show a genuine interest in hearing about your family, job, or your past? A casual fling usually isn’t too concerned with details like this. When they ask to hear more about you, it’s a promising sign they are looking for something deeper.

Communication and honesty are the keys to any good relationship. Does the person consistently communicate with you? Remember, consistency doesn’t mean that they are calling and/or texting every hour like a cuckoo clock. They should already have a life of their own—just like you do—with their own friends, families, job, obligations, and interests. But if the attraction and love are real you will become part of their life, and you part of theirs.

Planning for a Future Together

Do they talk about the fall--making plans for perhaps Halloween? A fall concert? Any of that shows they want to see you in their future. They may also want to see how you react to their questions, hoping you want to see them in your future too.

Other Small Signs Someone Sees You as Part of Their Life

Do they include you on their social media postings? Sharing pictures or posts about your relationship is a positive sign they see you as part of their life. Do they remember things about you or your tastes, like remembering whether you prefer Pepsi over Coke? Taking the time to remember and honor your preferences is a good sign that they are thinking about you in more than just a casual way. Do they remember the names of your family members or your pets? Remembering small details like this show that they pay attention to things you tell them. How willing are they to step out of their comfort zone while still respecting boundaries? For instance, they might be a big football fan, but you’ve never watched a game in your life. Or perhaps you adore musicals, and they prefer movies filled with car chases instead of songs. Can either of you compromise easily or be willing to try something new to have a shared experience together? Finally, have either of you deleted any dating apps you were on? If you know you’ve found someone you want to stick with, you don’t really need to keep them on your phone.

How Fast is Too Fast?

A word of caution though—if they come on too strong too fast, there’s a chance they may be ‘love bombing’ you. They shower you with so much attention that it’s not easy for you to think straight—but it is easier for them to manipulate you. In that case, they aren’t as much truly interested in you as they are interested in getting what they want from you like sex, attention, or even just a feeling of excitement or winning once they have you fully hooked. Sadly, they often disappear, ‘ghosting’ you after they get their fix from the relationship

A better sign is when your summer love seems willing to take their time to get things right. They aren’t moving as slow as a turtle, leaving you wondering if you matter at all to them. They are moving more carefully and respectfully, with your needs and boundaries in mind. Think of it like the speed a diamond cutter might use when carefully cutting a raw gem into a stunning masterpiece.

Spiritual Signs of Lasting Love

I believe that deep down we all know the important things that will happen in our lives. But spiritual law prevents us from knowing everything all at once. If we did, there wouldn’t be any real opportunities for growth or learning. We would just be reciting or acting out that knowledge, like a script. There is also the angelic gift of free will that can override predetermined destiny. You have the right to choose in all things.

Keep in mind that the world is becoming more spiritually aware. The veil between our world and spirit is thinning, making it easier for signs to make their way to us. For instance, people are picking up on the significance of seeing repeating numbers—angel numbers—like 111,333, 444, an so on. These types of signs let you know when you are on right path. If you had questions about love and these special numbers or other signs start appearing frequently in your life, know that you are being divinely guided right now.

Turning a summer love into a lasting love means setting down a strong foundation for it to grow. Firstly, it is important to establish a sense of friendship between the two of you. Besides being passionate with each other, you ought to like each other too! Make sure the essentials of trust, honesty, and communication are part of your relationship.

Summer ends during the sign of Virgo, a zodiac sign all about stability. Summer love can turn into an enduring, forever love. It does not have to fade like a summer tan. It can grow stronger. When you have found The One—and you are your summer love’s One—together you are One. Summer love can turn into lasting love, just like summer’s exuberant energy mellows into the steady season of fall.
