What are Limiting Beliefs?
Limiting beliefs are those insidious messages we tell ourselves that aren't really true. The problem with limiting beliefs is that they become more powerful with repetition. If you feed these messages to yourself often enough, they can become your reality. Think carefully about the way you talk to yourself and make sure you're not creating a cage of unhealthy thoughts that will stop you from reaching your full potential.
Identifying Your Limiting Beliefs
Limiting beliefs are negative messages you tell yourself that prevent you from moving forward and accomplishing your dreams. Nearly any pessimistic view can take the form of a limiting belief. Some common self-limiting messages that we tell ourselves include:
- I'm not smart enough to figure this out.
- I'm too old now to do that.
- There's not enough time to pursue my dreams.
Limiting beliefs come from beliefs others have taught you or experiences which led you to conclude that this is the way things are. Look for those problematic little phrases like "I can't," "they won't," "I'm not," or "I don't." These are all limiting beliefs that will create a confining reality where you're building barriers between yourself and your dreams.
Challenging Your Limiting Beliefs
The first step to overcoming limiting beliefs is to diligently challenge them, one by one. Sit down with your stumbling blocks and really examine whether they're true. Do you truly believe that you're not qualified for the promotion? Then pick up a piece of paper and list all your strengths, abilities, and accomplishments. Gather some letters of recommendation from others and see what they think of you. If your qualifications truly don't stand up to the requirements for the job, focus on building those skill sets and climbing the ladder rather than lamenting the rung that you're currently on. Do you honestly believe you’re not worthy of true love? Then list all the qualities that make you a unique and beautiful person, inside and out. If you don't feel like you have enough information to challenge a belief such as "I'll never find love," consider speaking with a love psychic or another specialized intuitive advisor who can help you see the big picture more clearly.
Changing Your Self-Talk
Diligently work to reframe your beliefs and turn your self-talk into a powerful force for positive change. Turn "I hate the way I look," to "I have lovely eyes that are filled with kindness," or "My smile can light up anyone's day." Ditch self-talk like "I can't paint," to "I'm going to take a painting class and build new skills," or "I create unique art that's vibrant and inspiring."
Creating a New Reality with Positive Affirmations
An affirmation is a positive statement which is repeated to re-program your mind to manifest a change in your life. Positive affirmations are powerful tools for a new beginning. All of this is done with your mind, because whatever is in your mind—you become or you create. Illuminate your mind and with positive affirmations, and you will bring the light of the New Age to you. Take time to consider what your life would look like if you were free from limitations. Allow yourself to dream, unrestricted by any thoughts of what is or isn't possible. Flesh out this fantasy life fully, then get to work manifesting it. What messages do you need to repeat to embody this new reality? Try some powerful mantras like:
- I trust myself and my decisions.
- I am worthy of love.
- I choose happiness.
Break down your limiting beliefs one by one and replace them with an arsenal of powerful positive messages that directly respond to the insecurity or limitation you are feeling, as Psychic Advisor Roxanne explains in her article, How to Create Affirmations that Actually Work.
Positive affirmations are easy to practice and create. If you're feeling stuck, try our Positive Affirmation Generator for fun and inspiration. Write them down on small cards leaving the cards where you will notice them. As you begin to repeat the affirmations visualize the idea into creation. Repeat as many times as you can. The more you repeat the sooner the manifestation is produced.
