All adults, including you, were children at one time. Whether you are aware of it or not, the type of environment that you were raised in effects the way you relate to yourself now as well as how you see and approach other people. If things were not as good as they should have been when you were a child, you might still be holding on to your emotional wounds probably because it is easier to bury them deep rather than deal with them. If this is the case, you should know that your inner child is still alive and well within you. This inner wounded child is still holding on to the pain even after years, and he or she may be confused by it all.

Signs that Your Inner Child is Confused by Past Memories
Most people do not realize the power that their inner child has on their lives. Your inner child has free reign and it can mess things up for you both at work and in your relationships if allowed. Most of all, a confused inner child can disrupt the most important relationship of all - the relationship that you have with yourself.

The consequences of not taking time to heal and repair trauma from early on can manifest itself in different ways. Trauma from the past can cause you to become too rigid, shameful about yourself, and dominating. It can also make you easily manipulated, weak willed, sexually compliant, ineffective or it can cause you to avoid conflict entirely. Memories from the past that are unresolved often cause you to shift erratically from one extreme to another, which results in an unstable personality and shifty mood.

Ways A Confused Inner Child May Effect You

  • It causes us to deny ourselves genuine intimacy and connection to others. As a result, we keep people at a distance in a bid to protect ourselves and our past experiences not knowing that they are harming us in the long run.

  • Whenever we feel ashamed, we tend to experience isolation and emotional abandonment again just as if we were children. The only way to prevent this from happening is by dealing with your memories from the past so that they can stop having power over you.

  • When we do not come to terms with our past childhood experience, it causes us to keep making the same mistakes. Bad behavior can escalate in a bid to ease our psychological or emotional pain. When bad behavior is not checked and handled once and for all, it can result in a never-ending cycle of destruction.
