My mom is a clairsentient psychic, meaning she has the ability to “know” things outside of the psychic’s purview, and my sister has very strong empathic skills. I also have aunts and uncles with the gift as well. We’re a fun group at parties, that’s for sure!
I speak to a lot of people who are curious about their own psychic abilities and how to work on their gifts. I understand those questions because I was there! My suggestion for working on your gift is to follow my story.
When I was 19, I wasn’t sure how to practice my gift; I was all over the place! It can be hard to be a young psychic because the emotions are more dramatic than for a normal teen. Now imagine that, with the added bonus of talking to the dead, and precognition! Not pretty.
That’s when I met a tarot card reader who literally changed my life. I was with friends at a tea party where she began to talk to me. She gave me a tarot reading and told me things about my past that were absolutely true. She also told me some things about my future which did come to pass. The biggest impact of that meeting was my instant connection to the tarot. I knew I wanted to learn and use that as the gateway to my gift.
As things often happen, I was given the time to learn tarot by Mother Earth herself! It was 1993 and I was preparing for what was being called “The Storm of the Century.” I’m typically not afraid of a little snow storm, but the meteorologists were so adamant that I considered I would have plenty of time to learn the tarot!
I spent time looking at the dozens of tarot decks on the market, but I kept returning to one deck in particular. The art was appealing to me, but even more than that, I felt drawn to the deck. I couldn’t put it down! Needless to say, I purchased that deck and went home to happily learn the art of being a tarot reader.
Once the snow began that evening, it didn’t stop for quite some time. We were stuck in our homes for over a week! Since my work was closed as well, I focused my entire energy on learning the tarot. I grew immensely as a person and a psychic that snowy spring. Learning tarot is not just a simple divination tool, it is a way within, and that is the greatest gift.
My deck, the one I still use today, is the Mythic Tarot. I love mythology and was very drawn to the artistry of the deck. When you choose your deck make sure that you feel a connection.
First pull out the major arcana cards (twenty-two cards dealing with the various major human conditions) to start your memorization. These major cards deal with important issues in your life – death, birth, marriage, painful breakups, job promotions, joy, faith, love. Once you feel comfortable with those cards, start memorizing the suites. I would start with the cups or emotion cards. After that, you're on your way!
Some rules to keep in mind when reading tarot:
• Do not force someone to have a reading just because you want to learn.
• The first week that you have your cards, sleep with the deck under your pillow to allow your energy to soak into the cards.
• Cover the cards with a scarf or a material that you love.
• When you read to others, do so from a loving space.
• Do not judge.
• Meditate and learn to cleanse your energy with sage and prayer.
