Technically, the Autumn Equinox, is the exact twin of the Spring Equinox.  An equinox refers to the equality of the day in terms of dividing the day between darkness and light.  Exactly 12 hours of sunlight and 12 hours of moonlight or darkness are experienced during the Spring Equinox and during the Autumn Equinox.  No other time of the year can one observe such an equal occurrence.  One day each Spring and one day each Fall.

This is the season of celebrating the “Sun”  with all the bounty that its presence has presented during its season starting in the Spring and lasting throughout the Summer months.   It is a time to say farewell to the “setting sun” with the approach of the coming season of darkness, for after the Equinox of Autumn, the sun is seen less and less each day.   In mythology, it is taking its long earned rest.

From the moment of the Autumn Equinox, the Sun’s strength dwindles, until the Winter Solstice in December, when the Sun once more grows stronger and the days once again become longer than the nights.    There are myths and tales from all different cultures that emphasize in the significance of the sleeping or resting sun.  In some stories the Sun is actually imprisoned, in others it is a period of gestation, in which the sun ( and we human should begin to plan and think about the coming year – where will our profit and gains come from?).

The Autumn Equinox is the celebration of what is sometimes called the Second Harvest – or The Harvest Home.   In farming communities, it is a time when a “corn king”  or a “harvest king” is chosen in the community and raised up to a position of special importance.  Connected to this tradition is one of sacrifice to assure that the land  (or our business lives) will have great prosperity in coming year.   

Although Harvest Festivals have their roots in very ancient agrarian traditions and beliefs,  in these modern times, we still understand that it is the time to mark the calendar and make note that “growing and harvesting time” was at an end and soon winter will be upon us.  During the middle ages, under the name of “Michaelmas,” a feast in honor of the Archangel Michael took place on the day of the Equinox.   It is a time to say goodbye with heartfelt joy to the prosperous rays of the days of the long sun, as we send it on its long journey of rest.   Often the Equinox is the beginning of a period that ends with the Halloween, which is also known as “the new year” in many cultures and faiths around the world.

If you would like to celebrate the period of the Harvest Festival to bring extra good luck and prosperity to you and your home, you might consider decorating your home with a garlands of grapes and vines, gourds, pine cones, acorns, wheat, dried leaves, rattles, Indian corn, and horns of plenty.  All of these items mark the prosperity of the season.

Here is a recipe for one of my favorite Potpourris for the Autumn Equinox Season.  I hope you enjoy it as much as my family and I do.

Autumn Equinox Potpourri
Mix together the following  (the amounts are eyeballed and many of the ingredients can be found at your local health food and craft stores)
In a large glass mixing bowl put about a cup of Oak Moss mixed with 60 drops of Honeysuckle Oil  (Set aside)

Then add:
One dozen Acorns, two cups of dried and smashed Oak leaves, a cup of dried Pine Needles, a half a cup of crushed Sage (fresh is best), two cups of dried Rose Petals, one cup of dried Passionflower,  one cup of Honeysuckle. 

Stir the potpourri well and store in a tightly covered ceramic or glass container.   Lay it out in glass potpourri containers throughout the season to bring a delightful aroma to the air.

This is my dog named Mandy, shes an english spinger spaniel and is three years old. She loves swimming, chasing bubbles and  the lazer light. She hangs out with the girls, she likes the snow but you can tell by her tail that its not as fun as the summer. Her favorite thing is after a hard day of chasing those bubbles, I give her a million kisses and massage her, she sighs and falls off into a deep sleep were her little legs are still moving in sleep to catch the next bubble.

As I’ve grown older, I’m alot more calm now. I just have always had an attitude of I can do it, nothing is ever out of my realm of possible.  You never know what you’re able to achieve unless you step out of your comfort zone.

This picture is my favorite beaches of south jersey from Atlantic City to Wild Wood. Last weekend I was on a boat tubbing with friends, then out dancing. The week before I was flying a kite on the beach at 2 in the morning! Hey as I told the beach patrol guy, (ha, ha) I can fly it easier when I don’t have to worry about it coming down and crashing into kids,  He agreed.

Life is filled with simple pleasures, just take some time to look. One of my favorite things to do is to take pictures then try and paint what I see. You can’t imagine how many shots I take to get the one I want. I’m relentless until I’m satisfied.

If you can’t get away this summer create a getaway as you see it, right here at home! There are so many wonderful things you can do with your friends that don’t cost much, such as going for long hikes and pampering yourself with a hot spa treatment with your better half.  

Sometimes the journey is not meant just to travel but to take that deep journey within. Dinning at home or inviting family and friends to a pool party or BBQ with music and dancing is always fun.  You can decorate it as a Luau with sweet fruity cocktails and bring a wonderful festive feeling into your summer. Going to the beach for a nice long walk and swim is always a great way to unwind and relax.  Personally I love reading by the ocean, on the sand, covering my eyes with some literature and dabbing on a bit of sun block.

My best friend is a beautiful girl named Belle. She has been my best friend for over 10 years now and I can’t remember a time when we ever had a bad moment. She always brings a smile to my face and a skip in my step.  She really keeps me going, just trying to keep up with her. I’ve been right there beside her during her pregnancies and births.   Each little baby bringing me even more joy than I could imagine.

Since the new millennium started in 2000, I have had three bouts with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.   I know I owe most of the credit for the first two successful trips down Lymphoma lane to my doctors and the other Johns Hopkins medical professionals.  My son, Michael, was working in Belgium the last time and had to come back to the US twice in order to donate his bone marrow, which got me into remission the last go-round.  Despite all the medical personnel and my family’s intervention, it was Belle who was really the reason that I just had to get better.  It was Belle that convinced me that I had too much to live for and that I had to fight as hard as I could because she was counting on me to be with her forever.

You see Belle, whose entire name is Belle Lee Button, is my tiny Yorkshire terrier.  She is my devoted sidekick and beloved best friend.  Even now she is lying beside me.  She never asks for anything but only gives love and devotion.  She is my shadow and where you see me, you will also see Belle.

Most people never realize the power of a pet.  Belle is the epitome of the perfect, powerful pet.   Pets can teach us unconditional love, if we let them. No matter what we say or do, they just want to love us and to be loved by us. They generally do what we ask and without wondering what we will do for them. Unlike most children or others, they never ask for money, jewelry, the car, expensive footwear, an IPhone, or anything else for that matter.  They don’t talk back, tattle about us to others, their not judgmental, they never fire us from our job as caregiver, they don’t cheat on us with others, I could go on and on. Belle taught me the power of a pet.   And, she keeps teaching me day by day.   I am so lucky to have met Belle Lee Button!

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all be more like Belle?    Please, always be kind to your pets, treat them like they are the special that they are and remember that they are truly wonderful role models for us all.
