Mother’s Wisdom

Thinking of my mother, Anne. Happy Mother’s Day!

“Man plans and God laughs.” That was one my Mom’s favourite sayings and this story illustrates the point perfectly.

It was my last outing with my mother and I remember this cute story she told me that held much wisdom for me, especially the more I thought it over.

It was June 25, 2006, and we were sitting by her pool for the very last time we would ever do that. We lay on lounge chairs like giggly young women enjoying the lovely weather and cherishing each moment together. She whispered loudly to me since there were many people close by and especially the one she’d tell the story about.
She said, “Cory look, do you see that guy over there?” I said “Yes I do,” and I said it with a flirty tone, as she pointed out this hot guy. She continued, saying, “He’s not only handsome but a good man and I’m going to tell you a cute story about him.” I relaxed back in my comfy chair looking over to my mother feeling happy, as if our conversations would go on forever, not knowing this would be one of her last fun ones, since she passed on almost six weeks later.

She went on to remind me that he was a son of a close friend. I remembered the friend but had very little knowledge of her children and especially her very gorgeous son. My mother knew him well, as he worked on their condominium board of which she was the president. Apparently he had come to sit with her by her bedside after one of her chemotherapy days. This I was most happily surprised to hear, since she was in her seventies and he in his mid thirties. My mother’s youthful energy never ceased to amaze me.

She continued to weave her tale, and I looked over to him, and then to her, while she related most effusively how this man had been seeking a size two wife through many expensive matchmakers and how he would even want to meet the mothers of these women to see what size their mothers were. She laughed as she told me of his journey to find the perfect size two. I was astounded that he was going to these lengths, despite my being not at all naïve as to how people could want their ideal match, no matter how difficult that was for them.

My mother became even more animated when she said, “Guess whom he married after all of that?” Of course, simply going along for her story ride thought it must have been a size two woman; what else could she be after all of that money spent? And I was wrong because my mother looked at me about to lay this ending on me smiling as she sarcastically stated, “No, he married a size fourteen.”  My eyes widened in total surprise, but I have to admit not total but for the moment of how my mother set me up so well. She said, “Yes, he married a size fourteen woman after all that energy and money spent on his size two dream.” My mother went on to tell me how lovely the woman was and how happy they were.  No further details came, nor were they necessary to her goal.

It was funny how my mother would share these anecdotes, rolling her eyes as she often did in seeming total disinterest in anything metaphysical, in the possibility of destiny directing our course through our own will. I often noticed though how she had these moments of total clarity where she saw things without bias and in a most divine way. It was as though in one breath she’d say a table is only a solid mass, and in the next, she’d say there are fated occurrences that will happen, no matter how you try to control your life.

My Momma’s wisdom is with me every day, and often I laugh at something she said and especially how she said it. She was so funny and she left me with a sense of humour and lightness amidst my serious depths. I am eternally grateful for my beloved mother. I’ve discovered Mothers are Forever, no matter where, or how they are!

I love you, my Mother! You’re with me all the time now.
