We often think of meditation as a way to find your inner quiet, contemplative place. However laughter as a form of meditation is one of the most powerful ways to affect your mood.  When we laugh, our entire being becomes consumed. Research has shown that parts of our limbic system, the primitive part of the brain that involves emotion, are involved in laughter. The sound of boisterous laughter is more contagious than any germ!  Think of a time when someone made light of a situation and you were able to laugh your way through your anger, sadness or fear. Laughter allows us to temporarily rise above our stress and briefly feel a sense of relief that no pill or homeopathic remedy can provide.

Laughter increases energy and people who allow laughter to overcome them on a regular basis have lower standing blood pressure than the average person. Breathing becomes deeper which sends oxygen enriched blood throughout the body.  Laughter causes a decrease in stress hormones and great big belly laughs can be a real workout equivalent to a few minutes on an exercise bike or treadmill! There have been numerous studies that show that those who laugh live longer, suffer less physical aliments and are more likely to rate their quality of life higher.

Add a little laughter meditation to your regular routine. Start by stretching and tensing and relaxing your muscles and face. Start feeling silly by making funny faces; use a mirror if it helps. Stick out your tongue, roll your eyes back, no one is watching! Now take a moment to recount something that had you laughing so heartily that you could barely contain yourself. Don’t take time to wonder what the neighbors think of you cackling away, lose yourself in the moment. Start with giggles and move to out loud laughing, start to feel the laughter in your whole body, enjoy the ache in your face muscles, the tears in your eyes, the tingling in your hands! Let your whole body be engulfed in the laughter. Let the laughter descend naturally, let the peaceful feeling of a good laugh blanket you in joy.   Walk away from your laughter session knowing that laughter really is the best medicine!
