What’s in a Dream?
Dreams are a communication of mind, body and spirit. Various states of consciousness, such as sleep, meditation or deep concentration, daydreams and full consciousness produce different brain wave activity. Your mind and spirit, while at rest, analyze long and short-term memory. Emotions, thoughts, ideas, actions and interactions all fall within the short-term memory “files”. Your long-term memory is comprised of valuable data from your life experiences and the philosophy you follow.

At the same time, your mind is also processing data on many different levels. Your belief system and personal values, along with any information that you have gained through intuition, are deeply imbedded and form the basis for which you are. As you experience new ideas, thoughts, images and activities, your mind is constantly reshuffling the deck, so to speak, and the end result is what you dream about each night. Dreams are easily influenced by factors in your life and many things can be learned and gained from dreams.

We know that during the sleep state, our bodies and outside distractions are at rest.  What few of us realize is that this time also provides the mind the opportunity to allow our intuitions and subconscious fears or “hunches” to surface. Add all these factors together, and you now understand why dreams can be so complex and often confusing.  Understanding your dreams can help you focus and improve the quality of life that you live.

Record your dreams!
Plan to track your dreams. A pad and pencil or tape recorder at your bedside for recording will allow you to capture the imagery of your dream. If you have difficulty in remembering your dreams, try this simple technique. Roll to your left side, close your eyes, breathe slowly and smoothly, and think about the dream. Recall the last images you remember of the dream and trace them backward as you remember more detail.  Your effort to recall your dreams tells your subconscious mind that you want its opinion of your life. Your dreams illuminate what you are not able to consciously see. They indicate, on a much deeper level, those things influencing your life. You may not always understand your dreams, but with practice, you can learn to interpret their meanings as a reflection of your subconscious thoughts.  Deeper awareness of dreams and their meanings can lead to a better understanding of yourself, your values, and can help pinpoint areas of your life that need your attention.
