Dwelling on the past can be detrimental to your wellbeing. This is especially true when thinking of a past event brings your emotional state into a place of chaos, robbing you of emotional stability or peace of mind.
While it might sound counter-intuitive, it can be very helpful to bring to the surface something that happened in your past that continues to haunt or upset you. And, more importantly, these incidences are often buried in the subconscious mind resulting in a person acting out as if they’re on “automatic pilot”. What this means is that negative patterns or knee-jerk reactions might happen in a person’s life and the person is left wondering why they reacted so dramatically.
In This Podcast:I get you into a relaxed state coupled with a sense of safety. It’s very important that you feel protected and safe when you take this journey into your past. I explain how to do this in the podcast. I guide you to a relaxed state of being and to a safe environment by using a simple, but effective, relaxation process. Make sure you do this at a time and place where you know you will not be disturbed. Unplug all phones, turn off all electronic devices, and if there are other people in the house or place that you’re doing the meditation, ask them not to disturb you.
The purpose of being able to recall a past event is to become aware of how the event affected you. More than likely the emotion around the event has been imprinted into your cells and/or memory. This information can be easily obtained by being the observer of the situation rather than the participant. You’ve already experienced the event so there’s no need to have the experience all over again. But, it’s vitally important that you get a conscious awareness of how the event affected your emotional wellbeing which may have created a scenario causing those emotions to affect you in your current life.
When an event happens which causes a “jolt” to our nervous system, the emotional reaction automatically gets stored in our memory cells. Thus, we can develop patterns, often negative ones, because we’re still automatically reacting to the “fight or flight” mode we all have. This happens because of the initial "jolt" when the event originated.
Furthermore, our reaction to any given event happens because our emotions think they’re protecting us from a real or, perceived to be real, danger. But, now that we’re away from the “danger” that emotional state is no longer needed.
Imagination is a very important aspect for the process to be successful. Our imagination is a helpful tool that continues to bring us insight into certain behavior patterns which can be successfully altered.
Therefore, you don’t necessarily have to remember the event verbatim. Just let your imagination guide you. The key factor here is to understand what the emotion was and to be able to release the emotion so that it’s no longer affecting you. I tell you how to do this in the podcast.
