Life pulls us in many directions and it’s hard to pick just one direction to focus on. Work often comes first, with deadlines, stressful projects and bosses to answer to. Does Your Work come before You?
You’re exhausted and haven’t eaten a real dinner in days, but you need to finish one more email. Sound familiar? Being a hard-working individual is an admirable trait, but you can cross a line into work-crazed when you start putting your basic needs on the back burner. Set limits for yourself at work so no matter where the day stands, you’ll leave enough time for yourself at the end of it.
Is Work on your Brain After-Hours?
It’s hard to leave the projects, stress, day-to-day to-do-lists at work once you leave for the day. Hard, but so important! Your body, mind and spirit need time to re-group and re-charge at the end of a day. If you have difficulty shutting your mind down, try relaxing music, taking a long walk after work or writing in a journal. The time you allot to non-work is essential.
Has Work Become Your Hobby?
Do you find yourself constantly working on the weekends? When you’re out with friends or loved ones, are you continuously checking your email? Does work steal the spotlight in your conversations? It may be time to introduce something else into your life! Finding other things to do besides work is healthy and will lead to a more well-rounded you. Make a list of things you like to do and try one of them on your day off. Don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss.
